Though supposed to assure Spain’s stability, the monarchy is no longer the respectable institution as it used to be. Its glory explained by the democratic transition the monarchy ensured after Franco’s death, is now only an old memory for Juan Carlos. The king’s position is destabilized by the financial scandals involving his family, but also by his own attitude.

In april 2012, the country is shocked to learn that the monarch did not break his hip at the Royal palace as according to the official statement, but during a safari in Botswana. The king had to apologize on the national television.

Even more serious, his son in law, Iñaki Urdangarin, is involved in a corruption scandal. The infant her self, Cristina of Borbon, has become the subject of an investigation on April 3rd.

These scandals don’t facilitate Royal Family’s affairs and it becomes more and more difficult for them to justify to the Spanish people the costs of the Monarchy, in a country strangled by the economic crisis.
